Holocaust denial.

Iranian President Ahmadinejad makes an ass out of himself again. He "expressed doubt that the holocaust ever occurred". He has also recently turned down Russia's offer to supply Iran with enriched uranium, saying that Iran will enrich their own. Part of me wishes that cool heads in Iran would get rid of him. The other part of me is thankful that a complete moron is running their country; it only makes our job easier.

A few posts down I mentioned that Sistani had endorsed a religious Shia political party for the December 15th elections. According to Juan Cole, Sistani issued a new statement from his office today saying that the previous statement was a fabrication. In other words, Sistani may be staying out of politics, not telling people to vote for anyone in particular. It would be great if this turns out to be true.

Yea, it seems that Iran elected this ultranationalist guy for a reason. To me, I still think they're pissed off about that CIA thing where they took over the government for a number of years, essentially having a puppet government for awhile.

Good thing for Sistani to seperate himself from politics though. When you have a country that religious and in that much turmoil... that's going to save his hide in a number of ways! I'm surprised no one has gone for him yet, it seems they want to dismantle any power structure in Iraq, so why not Sistani?

Funny you should mention targeting sistani. I emailed juan cole to ask him that very question - why hasn't zarqawi gone after sistani? Sistani was THE reason that the january elections were a success. Cole's response was: "They've tried. He has good security."

Najaf is the number 1 city for the Shia, and they have militia everywhere. So I can definitely see how it would be tough for any assassin to get in there.
